Much of the land contained within Voyageurs National Park is accessible only by boat during the summer: located on the Kabetogama Peninsula it is a quiet retreat from the mainland. Boat travel is also the best way to get around the park as most of the areas have no connecting roads and the park is large enough that hiking would take too long to see much of it. For those without a boat, there are still many accessible areas of the park, including three visitor centers, campgrounds and hiking trails. During the winter, skiing and snowmobiling replace boating as the best way to travel, making the park popular year round, just for different reasons. Named after the trappers and fur traders that once frequented this area, the park is flush with wildlife in the sea, on the land and in the sky. The rich lakes that the park contains provide a variety of species of fish for boaters to try and catch while bird watchers will be amazed at the variety of wildlife the park contains. For those who wish for a more structured visit, the visitor centers provide a variety of talks and tours during the summer months that are both fun and educational. The park is located along the United States-Canada border, far north of all the state's major cities and towns.
Open daily year round.
Free.
